The week we are taking a peek at the American Black Bear cub.  The study subject for our notes are two young black bear cubs that we call Tommi & Tilly.  These cubs are probably about 6 month old (in scale to their trashcan, anyway), old enough to sometimes be left alone by mom. They are occasionally prone to wander, and frequently prone to trouble.  Tommi & Tilly are urban bears, living on the outskirts of a small village in the NE, and thus quite well aquinted with the pleasures of rumaging thru the trash with mom.  Today they wander off on an adventure of their own. .

First, we'd like to introduce you to our study subject for this chapter. . .

Meet Tommi & Tilly, the Twin Trashcan Teds.  Brother & sister, they are fraternal twins, of course.  Tommi is a tad larger (and a bit more clumsy) and Tilly is far more graceful.

Tommi is always teasing Tilly, the way big brothers always do. . .

He never stops, no matter how much Tilly tries to ignore him.  Sometimes she tells mom, other times, she just gets fed up and snaps back at him

Of course, they play together nicely, too

and sometimes not so nicely. . .

Today, the cubs have been conniving behind mom's back all morning, and Tommi has convinved Tilly to sneak off on an adventure with him. . .

As soon as mom was gone, the pair snuck out, heading for their favorite haunt. . .

The Local Trashcan.

soon, they spotted it (well, they're naughty cubs, to be sure, but not brave enough to wander far, this particular trash can was right on the edge of their own woods, the path was well worn & easy to follow)

They circled around it, sniffing its pleasures, inhaling those wonderful aromas wafting from within.

They had a plan of attack, they've seen their mom do this many times - but mom is a LOT bigger, too.  This time it would take a team effort!

Together, they knocked the can over & the lid fell off.  Tons of tin cans came tumbling out,

and Tommi & Tilly tackled their trash.

They snuffled and sniffed.

They licked and scratched.

Tommi found something good, and sat down to lick the inside of a can, while Tilly looked further into the can

Then Tilly found a can of 'sweet wrinkled peas', one of her favorites, and sat down too.

Together they burried their noses deep into their cans and licked. . .

and licked. . .

Deleriously happy, almost drunk with pleasure, Tommi rolled over on his back and dribbled the juice from a can of 'Tiger Lily' peaches down his chin.

Tilly dug deeper into the trash can, looking for treasure.

Tommi found an unopened can, this could be something great!
